How To Improve Your Home's Indoor Air Quality

Air Quality Duct Cleaning BarrieThe average person spends 90% of their time indoors!  Healthy indoor air can make a huge difference in your overall health.
How would you rate you indoor air quality?

Take the Lung Association’s Healthy Home Tour to take closer look at different areas in you home and how they contribute to your indoor air quality.  Designed to help you find out what can be harmful to you and your family, the Healthy Home Tour is the perfect tool to help you determine the quality of your air.

You can also follow these tips for improving indoor air quality:

Clean your air ducts!  Air ducts can become clogged with pet hair, dust, building materials, mould, bacteria and fungal growth.  Every time your heater operates, these contaminants are fed through your heating system and into the air you breathe.  All forced heating systems require periodic cleaning.

Clean your floors regularly.  Vacuum one – two times per week with a HEPA filter to ensure dust and debris is not blown back into the air.  Finish with mopping to catch any left over debris.  You can even mop with plain water or even use a microfibre mop.

Check your humidity levels.  Homes with high levels of moisture in the air are more likely to have issues with mould.  Controlling humidity will help you limit mould growth – consider using a hygrometer to measure humidity levels and a dehumidifier to reduce high humidity.

Avoid Chemical Pollutants.  Smoking isn’t the only potential pollutant of indoor air.  Harsh chemical cleaners should also be avoided, or minimized, due to their strong synthetic fragrances that emit chemicals into the air.  The Lung Association recommends making your own cleaning solutions using ingredients such as baking soda, vinegar or lemon juice mixed with water.

Improve Ventilation.  Poor ventilation is a contributor to mould growth and has a huge effect on indoor air quality.  Make sure you home is letting in enough fresh air while also using exhaust fans that vent to the outside.  Exhaust fans that vent to the outside are incredibly important for venting moist air from your bathroom or above your stove.

Bring in Houseplants.  Houseplants can help clean the air in your home by filtering out different pollutants.  Check out these 15 houseplants that help improve indoor air quality via the Mother Nature Network.

Avoid Scented Candles and Air Fresheners.  Commercial air fresheners can release harmful chemicals and pollutants in the air, with some even containing phthalates.  Scented candles may also contain similar pollutants, with the addition of soot residues.  If you can’t give up your candle or fresheners, look for a natural alternative such as essential oil diffusers or soy based candles.

5 Signs it’s Time to Clean Your Dryer Vents

When was the last time you had your dryer vent cleaned?

Dust, lint and debris can build up in your dryer vent over time, restricting air flow and creating a serious fire hazard. Length of the duct, malfunctioning dampers, frequency of use, and critters in the duct work, are all factors that contribute to lint accumulation and dryer overheating.

Here are 5 signs that its time to clean your dryer vent:

1. It takes a long time to dry your clothes. If you’re clothes are still wet at the end of the drying cycle and it takes your laundry multiple cycles to dry, your dryer vent is likely clogged. Not only does this present a fire hazard, but it also increases your operating costs and energy use.

2. Your dryer and clothes feel hot. If the outside or top of your dryer feels hot during the cycle, or your clothes are too hot to touch after the drying cycle, your dryer’s venting system may not be exhausting properly.

3. Lint is everywhere, except on the lint trap. If you've noticed that the lint trap has not been collecting any lint, or if there is lint debris outside of the driver vent opening, this is a sign that lint and dust are accumulating in the exhaust duct.

4. Your clothes have a musty smell. Lint and debris trapped in a dryer vent can sometimes have a musty and damp scent. When your dryer is running, the odour is pushed back onto your clothing, leaving them with an unpleasant scent.

5. It’s been over a year since you’ve had your vent cleaned. Dust, lint and debris can plug dryer vents over a period of time. Regular cleaning will prevent blockages and airflow restriction.

To reduce the risk of fire, manufacturers recommend a regular inspection and cleaning of the dryer vent, a minimum of once per year or more with heavy use.

Georgian Duct Cleaning offers residential dryer vent cleaning in Central Ontario. We use a powerful HEPA filtered “Lintvac” with a powered airbrush to blast compressed air and rotate inside the vent, effectively breaking up attached lint.

We also offer the LintAlert to monitor the exhaust vent and warn you of blockages.

How to Improve Air Quality in Your Office With Air Vent Duct Cleaning

During the winter months, we recirculate up to 85 per cent of indoor air!

This recirculated air is mixed with outdoor air, filtered and conditioned several times each hour to provide comfort and ventilation.

Recirculated air can come into contact with pollutants and contaminants, especially if Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems (HVAC) are not properly maintained. Not only can this impact employee morale and productivity, it can also create a negative image that affects your bottom-line.

Schools, offices and commercial buildings often have complex mechanical systems that require expert cleaning and maintenance to ensure that contaminants are properly removed. It is important to clean your HVAC system annually, but if you notice any of the following signs, you should clean your system as soon as possible.

Four Signs You Should Clean Your HVAC:

1. Visible stains on walls and ceilings

2. Poor indoor air quality

3. Occupant discomfort including health-related concerns

4. Employee absenteeism

Occupant discomfort is one of the more serious signs of poor indoor air quality that often leads to absenteeism. Symptoms that mimic a colds or the flu including headache, fatigue, sinus congestion, coughing, and sneezing can all indicate occupant discomfort.  If your employees get sick and miss work often, investigating air quality may be a great option for boosting their morale.

Georgian Duct Cleaning has the expertise to navigate the large and complex systems used by office and commercial buildings. A review of blueprints combined with visual or robotic inspection of interior conditions will determine recommendations for a suitable cleaning program for the affected area of entire building if necessary.

Our commercial duct cleaning services have been employed in Schools, Hospitals, Nursing Homes, Daycare Centers, Banks, Restaurants, Shopping Malls, Churches, Automotive Dealerships, Arenas, Fitness Centers and Large Sports Venues.

Fall is a Good Time to Clean Your Home's Air Ducts

As much as we want to savour the warm days of August, there are signs that the season is starting to change. It's getting darker earlier and in the morning the gardens are heavy with dew. If you look around at the maple trees you might notice the start of fall colours on some of the branches.

In a month or so we'll need to turn on our furnace and we'll be circulating air through the duct systems in our homes.

This is an optimum time to have your home's air ducts cleaned.

Residential air ducts should be cleaned when the house is new, following renovations and then approximately every two or three years after that, although many people elect to have them cleaned every year.

Modern construction may leave a large amount of drywall dust, insulation, shavings and various food debris, often left by construction workers. The Technical Safety Standards Association (TSSA) now requires that air ducts be cleaned following construction, especially if the furnace was used during construction.

In a new home the building debris leaves a film of dust on hardwood floors and all furniture. This can leave your skin feeling dry and itchy and can cause your furnace to malfunction. This dry dust, draws moisture from the air providing a perfect breeding ground and nutrient source for bacteria and microbial contamination. In older homes, the dust accumulates to significant, measurable levels, often several inches deep. The dust forms on all surfaces significantly reducing airflow through the system.

The solution to dirty air ducts is a professional cleaning from Georgian Duct Cleaning. The areas leading air duct cleaning company has been in business for over 22 years (since 1991), serving Simcoe, Muskoka, Haliburton, Grey/ Bruce, Dufferin and North York. The fleet of custom-built vacuums is specially designed to clean your entire heating and ventilation systems. The duct cleaning machines among the most powerful in the industry, include truck-mounted vacuums and portable HEPA filtered vacuums.

This fall, while you're tidying up the garden, think about your inside environment and getting it prepared for the winter. Once the temperatures drop and getting fresh air into the house is not a matter of opening windows, you'll feel good knowing that the circulating air in your home is moving through a clean duct and vent system.

Drop us a line and get a free quote for residential duct cleaning.

Top Reasons to Have Your Air Ducts Cleaned

When I talk to people about HVAC systems they often ask - should I get my household air ducts cleaned? There are many reasons to have air ducts cleaned and in addition to looking at the reasons, you need to make sure you're working with a reputable company with experienced service staff.

1.) Allergies - Some people have specific allergies to dust and special attention needs to be given to indoor air quality, such as frequent furnace filter replacement and duct cleaning. Duct cleaning will remove any build up that has accumulated over the years in your ductwork giving you a fresh clean air transfer system.

2.) Odours - pet smells and pet hair can build up in the ductwork and recirculated while the furnace fan is running. I read recently about a homeowner who bought an older home and could get rid of the doggie smell left over from the previous owner's pet. Cleaning the air ducts got rid of the dog hair they had been sweeping up and the odour was eliminated.

3.) Renovations - If you've had any significant renovation work done, drywall, asbestos abatement, lead paint removal, additions, you may need to have your air ducts cleaned to remove any construction debris.

4.) Animal Infestations - rodents and other small animals can nest inside the HVAC system. We often find dead rodents, animal droppings and nesting materials. Getting your air ducts cleaned is necessary to remove them and stop air blowing over the animal debris and into your house.

Georgian Duct Cleaning uses the latest in custom built, truck mounted and portable duct cleaning technology to thoroughly clean your home and commercial heating and cooling air duct system. Our uniformed, certified technicians attach the powerful vacuum via an 8-inch hose to your air ducts. Our vacuums pull between 7,500 -12,500 cubic feet of air per minute (CFM).

How Does it Work?

The vacuum is connected to the ductwork on each of the main duct plenums; this puts the entire system under vacuum. All registers and grills are sealed. Various agitation tools are fed through your ducts from each register and return grill. These high-pressure air tools and whips agitate inside the ductwork. As they thrash around, they brush and air sweep all surfaces. The multiple tentacles dislodge all contaminants. As the contaminants are loosened they are pulled out of the air ducts by the powerful vacuum.

The main runs are cleaned using our exclusive Ventri Clean system. Re-useable access points are sealed with a sheet metal plate, airtight gasket and screws. The technicians also clean the furnace fan, fan housing and accessible areas of the air conditioning coils.

An optional herbal-based sanitizer is fogged through the system to kill any lingering odours, molds or fungi.

A professional residential duct cleaning takes about two hours or more depending on the size of the house. Upon completion, a certificate of cleaning is applied to the duct-work.

Ontario Duct Cleaning Buyers Beware!

There are some great duct cleaning and furnace servicing companies out there in Ontario - and there are some that should be closed down.
The good duct cleaning companies are run with integrity, transparency and are motivated to help people by offering the best customer experience, great service and products with absolute professionalism.
Unfortunately the duct cleaning side of our HVAC industry is unregulated and as a result there are many companies out there who are not in the business to offer a service with integrity and honesty.
They are motivated only by money. So you have to watch out for them. I'm giving you this advice because I don't want you to fall for the scam.  As we often get the phone call afterwards from the homeowner afterwards to tidy up the mess.  They always say they wished they would have called us in the first place, and if they did, our quote, which can be a little higher but it's honest and we have a local guarantee for our customers.
Watch out for the scams - Here are some typical examples you can spot with these companies:
  • They do aggressive telemarketing, often from overseas
  • Advertising duct cleaning for the whole house for $99 dollars - often this is impossible
  • Advertising duct cleaning for $39.95 plus $7.95 per vent - not good
  • They use mail coupons and Groupons and do not seem to be present on the internet - they have to have a good website - don't you think!?
  • They do not have a truck marked with a company name, and maybe they don't have any official name that can be scene and viewed
  • They have a negative air machine and do not use compressed air or brushes to clean you vents
  • They shove a vacuum hose down your heating vents and thats all they do
  • They claim that duct cleaning takes under 1 hour to complete
  • Telemarketers calling your home randomly to offer you they’re unbelievable deals on duct cleaning - often saying their truck is in your area and they will give you a special price

There are a number of other obvious and not so obvious scams and such going around ... So here are some key questions to ask when looking to hire a duct cleaning company.
  1. Do they use compressed air or brushes to agitate the dust in you ducts?
  2. Do they have a negative air machine either portable or truck mounted to recover the dust and debris from your ducts?
  3. Are they local?
  4. How long does the cleaning take? On a home of 2500 Sq Ft and under it should take no less then 2 1/2 hrs and that is for a very basic and efficient duct cleaning

Checkout our Website at www.georgianductcleaning.ca we use all the proper methods and equipment and we have videos from the manufacturer of our equipment that give you complete transparency of our methods and equipment so we can clean your homes heating and or cooling ducts.
This link takes you to a video from Marketplace on CBC. It’s a great piece they did on exposing these blow and go companies in the Toronto area, You can be sure that we have plenty of the same kinda companies across Ontario. http://www.cbc.ca/marketplace/episodes/2013/01/when-the-repairman-knocks-3.html

Prevent Dryer Fires - Have Your Vented Cleaned and Monitored with LintAlert

Over a period of time, dryer vents become plugged with lint, hair and dust. If the dryer vent is not cleaned regularly, it will eventually become blocked, restricting the airflow that may cause a serious fire hazard.

Every year fires caused by plugged dryer vents account for loss of life and millions of dollars in property damage. Every bend in the duct-work, the length of the duct, birds, rodents, malfunctioning dampers and the frequency of use are all contributing factors to lint accumulations. The lint trap only catches a small amount of dust; the rest ends up inside the dryer exhaust duct where it accumulates.

When lint builds up it can cause the dryer to overheat resulting in a fire.

LintAlert for Dryers: LintAlert is a device we install on your dryer to monitor the air flow through the unit and to warn you if there are any blockages that can lead to fire or poor dryer operation. Plugged dryer vents also increase the drying time for every load of laundry, at the end of the cycle the clothes may still be wet. Your laundry may take multiple cycles to thoroughly dry. This increases operating costs and the amount of energy used. To reduce these hazards, dryer manufacturers recommend a regular inspection and cleaning to the dryer vent.

Your dryer vent should be cleaned at least once a year and more often with heavy use.

The Cleaning process: A powerful HEPA filtered "Lintvac" is attached to the dryer exhaust duct. A compressed air powered air-brush is fed through the dryer exhaust; it blasts compressed air and rotates inside the vent, breaking up all the attached lint. As it is loosened the vacuum removes the lint. The cleaning is completed by removing the dust from the area behind the dryer, the dryer duct is re-attached and the dryer returned to its original position.

LintALert After the cleaning is completed, we recommend installing a "LintAlert" to the dryer vent.

With every load the LintAlert checks the exhaust vent and warns you when it is starting to plug up again, so you can save energy and improve home safety. Dryer vent cleaning is offered at a discounted price along with air duct cleaning, or it can be scheduled as a stand-alone service. Georgian Duct cleaning also has the ability to clean large Laundromat and laundry plant exhaust systems.

Our team of fully trained, certified technicians would be happy to provide any of our services in your home or commercial building. We recommend the installation of LintAlert to monitor the safety of your dryer vent. Please review the video for more information or call us if you have any questions. (705) 722-5952

Georgian Duct Services to Commercial Laundromats

More and more people in Barrie, Simcoe County, and central Ontario are familiar with our top quality  residential services, such as Duct Cleaning.

Did you know that we also have the equipment and expertise to service the commercial business sector?

Our team of commercial cleaning specialists can perform various cleaning operations around your office building, commercial buildings, hotel. resort, school or laundromat.

Georgian Duct Services to Laundromats:

The dryer exhausts in commercial laundromats, dry cleaning plants, hospitals and othe bulk laundry institutions require periodic cleaning to remove dangerous lint buildup.

Commercial dryers are often heated by gas, the exhaust system vents the lint and the combustion gases through the same duct-work.  As these vents become clogged, there is an increased risk of fire and flue gases entering the work place.Typically these systems have large ducts that may travel a long distance before exiting the building, the length of duct increases the amount of lint that accumulates.

Clogged dryer vents also increase the drying time and overall operating costs. Laundromat customers tend to get frustrated with high drying costs and will look for a cheaper, more efficient alternative.

Commercial laundry exhaust systems should be cleaned regularly to maintain the health and safety of customers and employees, and to minimize operating costs.

The Benefits of Spring Cleaning

It's been a long drawn out winter in Central Ontario, and everyone is looking forward to opening up the windows and airing out the house.

In a few weeks, April showers will wash away the build up of dirty snow and ice and nature will take its course and lawns will grow anew.

Mother nature won't unfortunately step inside and help with your interior spring cleaning. Your furnace has been recycling dirt and debris through your air vents contributing to the dust layer that accumulates throughout the winter.  Add a few pets to the mix and the air can be, well let's just say, 'not fresh'.

Some homes also have a problem with damp basements and mold - you really don't want to breathe that in. Household cleaners can give off chemicals and with our windows closed for several months, the air in homes can be more polluted than air outside!

So roll-up your shirt sleeves. Put on some music and spring clean!

There are many benefits to spring cleaning - both physical and psychological. It makes you feel good, for one thing, knowing that things are clean, orderly, and the air is fresher.

Need more reasons? Here are some additional benefits.

1. You Have a Clean Home: There’s nothing better than having a home that’s clean and free from all the dust and clutter of the winter.
2. You Know Where Everything Is: going through your home and re-organizing cupboards and closets helps you see what you have and where it should belong.
3. Better Air Quality: cleaning your house and your air ducts reduces the contaminants you breath, like dust, mold, and mildew.
4. Get Rid of Clutter: When you are going through your belongs and sorting out the winter things, it's a great time to pass things on that you no longer need.
5. Your Appliances Will Last Longer: cleaning your appliances will keep them in service longer!
6. It Feels Good! - having an organized clean home reduces stress and increases the enjoyment of our surroundings.

When you're ready to spring clean - give us a call.

We can remove all the build-up in your heating and air conditioning ducts. When your furnace fan comes on in the summer you won't be contaminating your home with dust and dirt from the previous winter or perhaps even years of accumulated debris.

Our technicians are professional, polite, experienced, and have the best in technology at their disposal.

In addition to cleaning your air vents, we can also inspect your dryer vent and install a monitor to warn you of any build-ups. Dryer fires are dangerous but they can be prevented.

Does Your Spring Cleaning Include Duct Cleaning? Ask These Questions..

Everyone is longing for spring after having 4 solid months of winter! It's time to start thinking of spring cleaning and many people, who haven't had their residential ducts cleaned will be wondering if they should.
  1. Do you suffer from allergies?
  2. Do you often sneeze when you are at home?
  3. Do you have a lot of dust in your home?
  4. Is your home new or has it had recent renovations?
  5. Are you concerned about build-ups of dirt and debris in your ducts?
  6. Would you feel better knowing your ducts are clean when you hear the furnace fan come on?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, you could benefit from air duct cleaning in your home.

Your air ducts are home to dust, dirt, mold, bacteria, construction garbage, flakes of skin and hair.  These contaminants are released into the atmosphere of your home, causing indoor air pollution, and environmental sensitivity.  The air ducts require periodic cleaning to reduce these airbourne contaminants and to create a cleaner safer home for you and your family.

Residential air ducts should be cleaned when the house is new, following renovations and then approximately every two or three years after that.  Modern construction may leave a large amount of drywall dust, insulation, shavings and various food debris, often left by construction workers.

In older homes, the dust accumulates to significant, measurable levels, often several inches deep.  The dust forms on all surfaces significantly reducing airflow through the system.  This causes the furnace and air conditioner to work harder and longer to bring the house to the desired temperature.  You may also notice that the furnace has become noisy… This may be caused by dust accumulating on the fan blades, throwing the fan out of balance.

Learn About the Georgian Duct Cleaning Difference!

Your only choice for Source removal Air Duct Cleaning.  Georgian Duct Cleaning uses the latest in custom built, truck mounted and portable duct cleaning technology to thoroughly clean your home and commercial heating and cooling air duct system.

Clean Fresh Indoor Air
Our uniformed, certified technicians attach the powerful vacuum via an 8-inch hose to your air ducts. Our vacuums pull between 7,500 -12,500 cubic feet of air per minute (CFM).

A tiny video camera can be placed inside the ducts so you and the technician can monitor the cleaning process.

The Georgian Duct Cleaning system is superior to our competitors. Many of our competitors use modified shop-vac style vacuums or rotary brush systems. In theory they are a good idea, but they simply don’t work. The operators of these inferior units attempt to feed the two-inch vacuum hose through your duct-work.  It is extremely difficult to push these hoses past dampers and around the many elbows in a typical system.  The results are disappointing at best.

Try pushing your own vacuum hose down through your floor registers, I am sure you won’t get very far. These inferior systems only pull about 200 cfm. They have a rotating brush attached to the end of a 2-inch vacuum hose. The tiny holes at the end of the hose are smaller than a dime. This means that any debris larger than a dime is simply left behind in your air ducts.

The debris left behind could be construction debris, drywall, wood, chunks of fiberglass insulation, cigarette packages, coffee cups, pop cans, food debris and dead rodents.

Some companies solicit your business with illegal telemarketing, often with offshore phone rooms.  They offer you a ridiculously low price, explaining that they are in your area and they can clean your ducts for whatever today’s price is. If and when they show up, they are in your home for about 20 minutes, they do an inferior job and then present you with an inflated bill for several hundred dollars more than the “phone special”. They will have many excuses as to why it costs more.

Georgian Duct Cleaning DOES NOT DO ANY TELEMARKETING, our business is derived from referrals and in-bound calls, you call us when you are ready. We will provide you with an estimate over the phone. When our technicians arrive they will provide you with a written quote “before” we start any cleaning. You know exactly how much the cleaning is going to be, no surprises.

When you hire Georgian Duct Cleaning you can be assured that your air ducts are cleaned using industry standard “Source removal methods” by experienced, conscientious, certified technicians that take pride in their work.
