What’s in Your Dust? How to Reduce Dust with Air Duct Cleaning

Duct Cleaning Air Quality Barrie Bacteria AllergiesEver wondered what’s in your home’s dust?

The dust in your home can contain up to 9,000 different microbes … including 7,000 types of bacteria and 2,000 varieties of fungi. And while the majority of the bacteria and fungi are harmless, some of them can be linked to allergies and illness.

“In a typical six-room home, up to 40 pounds of dust is created annually through everyday living.”National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA)

Your heating and cooling system is the “lungs” of your home – it takes air in and breathes it out … pulling contaminants into your HVAC system and then recirculating them into the air. According to NADCA, this recirculation occurs on average 5 – 7 times per day, leading to a build-up of contaminants in your duct work.

Not only will you breathe in these contaminants on a daily basis, you’ll also be wasting 25 to 40% of your home’s energy! This waste of energy occurs because your HVAC system will have to work harder.

Dust accumulates inside your air ducts the same way as it can accumulate under a bed or couch. This dust is comprised of hair, flakes of skin, pet dander, lint, food debris, rodent droppings and construction debris. This dust can cause respiratory problems, trigger allergies and cause the system to be inefficient.

If you regularly dust and notice that your hard work is ruined only days later, or if you have a pet or have recently completed renovations, you should consider duct cleaning to remove the contaminants from the air.

To get started, simply give us a call and we will provide you with a free quote for residential duct cleaning services, based on the size of your home and an estimate of the home’s hot air vents and cold air returns. We can provide a written quote when needed.

From there, a typical residential cleaning takes approximately two hours. Our uniformed cleaning technicians will attach an eight-inch hose to your air ducts. All vents are sealed and then compressed air powered agitation tools are fed through the ducts. These tools operate on high pressure and high volume, as they travel through the ducts they brush and sweep all attached dust and debris. The loosened dirt and contaminants are sucked out of the air ducts by the powerful vacuum system.

Summer Duct Cleaning for Your Home, Office or School

Duct Cleaning Commercial School Office Barrie SUmmer
It’s summer time. And summer in Ontario usually means hot and humid. And if you’re like me, you’ve been enjoying the beautiful weather when you’re outside … but you’re also enjoying the comfort of an air conditioned home as well.

Your home’s HVAC system is probably running often. And while there are some great ways you can reduce the amount of time you’re running your air conditioning, (like using a programmable thermostat, shading from direct sunlight and preventing hot air from entering & cold air from escaping), you’ll still be running your HVAC system on a regular basis.

This means that you’ll be regularly breathing in airborne contaminants. Every time you run your air conditioning in the summer or furnace in the winter, you’re circulating contaminates through your air ducts and into the air you breathe.

You air ducts are home to dust, dirt, mold, bacteria, pet hair and sometimes construction garbage (you’d be surprised what we find in there!). Every time heat or cold air passes through the air ducts, it is pushed into your home and directly into the air you breathe.

Cleaning your air ducts can have some major benefits.

· Removes accumulated dust

· Removes debris and cobwebs

· Increases the efficiency of your system

· Removes contaminates following construction or renovation

· Reduce odours caused by pet smell or pet hair

· Allows you to identify and remove any animal infestations

But the biggest and most important benefit is a dramatic improvement in indoor air quality. You’ll be able to breathe fresh, clean air!

Summer is a great time of year to clean your home's air ducts.  Or clean your school's air ducts before back to school in September.  Contact us today for a free quote for home or school air duct cleaning!

5 Easy Ways to Improve Your Home’s Air Quality and Reduce Allergens

Allergy Air Quality duct cleaning barrie
Allergy season hit Ontario hard this year – in fact, it was reported that this year’s allergy season was one of the worst in years due to a combination of circumstances such as a snowy winter and delayed spring. What’s worse – an amalgamation of pollens has occurred, causing an increase in allergy symptoms ... and allergy season has just begun.

With such a high level of outdoor allergens, you may be spending more time inside. But did you know your home’s air quality may contain just as many allergens as outdoor air?

Indoor air pollution is just as likely to trigger an allergic response. Why? Because indoor air often contains higher levels of contaminants than outdoor air. Breathing in mold, pet dander, dust, animal droppings and pollen can lead to allergic reactions – and these contaminants may all be present in your air ducts.

When you turn on your home’s air conditioner, these contaminants are vented back into the air you breathe. If you find yourself experiencing symptoms of an allergic response, such as coughing, constant sneezing, a runny or stuffed nose, and itchy, watery eyes, while you are inside your home, it's time to implement some steps to improve your home’s air quality.

Step 1 | Clean Your Air Ducts

Cleaning your home’s air ducts will have a dramatic impact on your home’s air quality. Air ducts can be home to pet hair, dust, building materials, bacteria and fungal growth, which are fed throughout your home every time your HVAC system runs. Not only can these cause an allergic response, it can also cause respiratory infections and sickness, and create a dangerous fire hazard.

Step 2 | Buy Some Houseplants

There are certain houseplants that will not only improve the quality of air in your home, but will also collect pollen and pollutants in their leaves. The top plants recommended for relieving allergies are:

· Mums and Peace Lillies

· Golden Pothos and Philodendron

· Gerbera Daisies

· Areca Palm

· Lady Palm and Bamboo Palm

· Dracaena

These plants are known to remove toxins and allergens from the air.

Step 3 | Control Dust Mites

You can easily reduce dust build-up in your home by increasing the frequency of cleaning. Vacuum more often, or even consider removing carpeting and replacing with hardwood or linoleum flooring. In your bedroom, look for dust-mite proof covers and be sure to wash your bedding once per week. Consider choosing easy-to-clean furnishing such as chairs and dressers made of leather, wood or metal, and choose washable curtains made of plain cotton or synthetic fabric.

Step 4 | Stop Using Chemical Pollutants

Harsh chemicals, from your household cleaners to synthetic fragrances, can emit pollutants into the air. These chemicals circulate throughout your home’s air ducts and can linger in each room, causing you to continuously inhale harmful contaminants.

Step 5 | Reduce Humidity

Try to limit use of humidifiers and improve your home’s ventilation. Dust mites aren’t the only contaminant that thrives in humid environments; fungal contaminants like mold will flourish in moist areas.

Why Should You Clean Your Office Air Ducts in the Spring?

Spring Duct Cleaning air quality barrieHaving your air ducts cleaned in the spring is a great addition to your home cleaning tasks, but it shouldn’t stop there. Arranging to have your office air ducts cleaned after a long winter will have a huge impact on your office air quality.

Over the winter months, office air ducts can become contaminated with dust, dirt, mold and bacteria. And if you completed any office renovations during the winter months, including painting, you may still be breathing in those harmful contaminants.

Dirty air ducts in a commercial environment can contribute to various issues, including employee absenteeism, dirt and staining on the walls and ceiling, and occupant discomfort.

Occupant discomfort is one of the more serious signs of poor indoor air quality that often leads to absenteeism. Symptoms that mimic a colds or the flu including headache, fatigue, sinus congestion, coughing, and sneezing can all indicate occupant discomfort. If your employees get sick and miss work often, investigating air quality may be a great option for boosting their morale.

Office and commercial buildings, just like your home, require periodic air duct cleaning. Without periodic cleaning, bacteria, dust, fungal growth, and building materials will be forced through your building every time the HVAC and Air Conditioning system operates.

HVAC and Air Conditioning systems are often large and complex, serving multiple work areas and multiple floors. These complex systems require expert cleaning and maintenance to ensure contaminants are properly removed.

In order to effectively clean these systems, our certified technicians use robots to inspect, clean and sanitize confined spaces and complex duct systems. Our Ventri Clean system is a high volume air knife that is used to slice through dirt, with a rotating silica carbide brush eliminating stubborn pollutants. Our powerful truck mounted or portable HEPA vacuum system allows us to handle any size of heating, air conditioning or exhaust ducts, in homes, high-rise buildings, commercial buildings, schools, hospitals and factories.

Clean Your Air Ducts When You Spring Clean Your Home

Spring.. even though we haven't had any warm spring days yet, it won't be long until you want to open the windows and air-out the house. There's a wonderful feeling of renewal and energy in the spring, and if you are ready to take on spring cleaning you might want to consider having your air vent ducts cleaned as part of the annual routine.

Here are some questions to ask yourself.
  1. Do you suffer from allergies?
  2. Do you often sneeze when you are at home?
  3. Do you have a lot of dust in your home?
  4. Is your home new or has it had recent renovations?
  5. Are you concerned about build-ups of dirt and debris in your ducts?
  6. Would you feel better knowing your ducts are clean when you hear the furnace fan come on?
If you answer yes to any of these questions, you could benefit from air duct cleaning in your home.

Your air ducts are home to dust, dirt, mold, bacteria, construction garbage, pet hair...  These contaminants are released into the atmosphere of your home, reducing the freshness of indoor air quality and increasing environmental sensitivity.  Your home's air ducts require periodic cleaning to reduce these airbourne contaminants and to create a cleaner safer home for you and your family.

Residential air ducts should be cleaned when the house is new, following renovations and then approximately every two or three years after that.  Modern construction may leave a large amount of drywall dust, insulation, shavings and various food debris, often left by construction workers.

The Technical Safety Standards Association  (TSSA) now requires that air ducts be cleaned following construction, especially if the furnace was used during construction. In a new home the building debris leaves a film of dust on hardwood floors and all furniture.  This can leave your skin feeling dry and itchy and can cause your furnace to malfunction.  This dry dust, draws moisture from the air providing a perfect breeding ground and nutrient source for bacteria and microbial contamination.

In older homes, the dust accumulates to significant, measurable levels, often several inches deep.  The dust forms on all surfaces significantly reducing airflow through the system.  This causes the furnace and air conditioner to work harder and longer to bring the house to the desired temperature.  You may also notice that the furnace has become noisy… This may be caused by dust accumulating on the fan blades, throwing the fan out of balance.

The solution to dirty air ducts is a professional cleaning from Georgian Duct Cleaning.  The areas leading air duct cleaning company has been in business for over 22 years (since 1991), serving Simcoe, Muskoka, Haliburton, Grey/ Bruce, Dufferin and North York.

The fleet of custom-built vacuums is specially designed to clean your entire heating and ventilation systems.  The duct cleaning machines among the most powerful in the industry, include truck-mounted vacuums and portable HEPA filtered vacuums.

The uniformed cleaning technicians, attach an eight-inch hose to your air ducts.

The owner of Georgian Duct Cleaning invented and refined many of the tools that are now found throughout the industry in North America.
